KINDRED a book of photography by Giovanni di Mola
Giovanni di Mola grew up in Astoria, Queens. He was a sensitive sole growing up with strong family connections but searching for his tribe. Sneaking off to Manhattan in his teen years, he discovered a magical “other-world” of discos and club scenes. It was there, Giovanni explains “he glimpsed a new tribe of kindred spirits, enraptured in the unknown, brave and vulnerable, pushing themselves through a metamorphosis.” He began photographing them, first as a diary and then as a testament to their act of searching.
In 2004, Giovanni moved from Astoria, Queens to Hudson, NY. Here, in a little river town on the Hudson once known for whaling, prostitution and trade, was a place that had lost its identity along the way. The landscape and people were familiar—shifting in their state of being, yet to find their pose. It gave Giovanni the chance to restart with no expectations but so much space and light to be inspired. The people he connected with became his Kin.
The photographs featured in KINDRED were all taken and edited from June 2004-June 2017. Below is a selection of photographs from the book. KINDRED is available for sale online and in Hudson at Valley Variety. The photographs are being shown and available for sale, along with the book, at Mikel Hunter in Hudson.
Giovanni lives in Hudson and continues to pursue his photography while DJ’ing for private events. Connect with Giovanni di Mola
