Mark and Larry got their first introduction to the world of antiques when they went to a flea market in 1980. Armed with a card table and a heap of old wallpaper from Larry’s dad that he was getting rid of in a move, they paid their $5.00 booth fee and prepared to make some extra money. While there, they got the bug, and wanted to see more. Someone at the market recommended they attend a much bigger flea market, and then someone told them about Brimfield, MA. They started attending auctions and buying became a regular activity. They made it to the Brimfield flea market for the first time in 1984, and Mark has attended every year since.
They learned everything they could about the business. Antiques became a way of life, and Mark left his full time job, and opened his first shop in Albany in 1989. At that time, Larry was still working, but he stayed involved, having a collection of baseball cards in one of the cases.
Larry decided to join Mark a couple years later, and they both opened up individual stores near an auction house. When the upstairs got invaded by raccoons, they decided to listen to the sage advice of a friend who recommended Hudson.
Mark moved right away, and Hudson turned out to be the right move. Larry joined him soon after, and they opened their first joint store. “Mark’s Antiques” now added “Larry’s Back Room”, because (of course) the space had a back room. They made their home there for twenty years. They’ve become active members of the Hudson business community, and have been featured in local press and noted in publications such as Architectural Digest.
After 20 years on Warren Street in Hudson, NY, Larry and Mark had outgrown their space. They seized a new opportunity to more than double their space and make browsing easier for their customers. Their new location at 99 South 3rd Street had been spotted by a few dealers, and was in a rapidly growing area of Hudson. Soon after they settled in, they were surrounded by other antique dealers and designers. The timing was perfect.
Mark always had a penchant for architectural elements, and over the years this developed into a new form of expression. Eight years ago, he started experimenting with putting “found objects” into new form, and had his first art show in 2008. The show was listed on art.com, and since then his sculptures have become a main part of his life. They can be found in homes all over the tri-state area, including Hudson, New York, New Jersey, the Hamptons, Bucks County, and the Adirondacks. They have also been featured in lobbies and storefronts in New York City. For the first time, Mark is regularly showing his own work at his home location right in Hudson.
Larry was able to expand his area, and properly display an inventory that was being previously crammed into a prohibiting space. He now has a wide collection of antiques, primitives, and country furniture.
Come explore the Hudson area and see all that they have to offer. Visit Mark and Larry’s Antiques at 99 S 3rd St, Hudson, NY.
